Titleist Pro V1 vs Pro V1x: Which Should You Play?
The real difference between the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x — flight, spin and feel — and how to pick the right one for your game.

If you play golf in Australia, chances are you have stood in a pro shop staring at two almost identical white boxes: the Titleist Pro V1 and the Pro V1x. They look the same, cost the same, and are the two most-played balls on professional tours. So what is the actual difference, and which one should you be playing?
Here is the straight answer, minus the marketing fluff.
The quick answer
Both are premium, cast-urethane balls built for distance, greenside spin and feel. The difference is in flight and feel:
- Pro V1 — lower flight, lower long-game spin, softer feel. Flatter, more penetrating ball flight.
- Pro V1x — higher flight, a touch more spin, slightly firmer feel. Higher trajectory and more stopping power.
Neither is “better”. They are built for different ball flights and different players.

Titleist Pro V1: the lower, softer flight
The standard Pro V1 is a three-piece ball with a softer compression. It flies lower, spins a little less off the driver and long irons, and feels noticeably soft off the putter face. If you already hit the ball high, or you fight a ballooning flight into the wind, the Pro V1 keeps your trajectory in check and gives you a penetrating, controllable flight.
It is the go-to for players who want maximum control and a soft, buttery feel around the greens. You can see our current stock of used Pro V1 golf balls here.
Titleist Pro V1x: the higher, firmer flight
The Pro V1x is a four-piece ball with a firmer feel and a higher launch. It climbs higher, holds its line in the wind for stronger swingers, and produces a little more spin — which can mean more stopping power on firm greens. Players who need help getting the ball up, or who want that higher, aggressive trajectory, tend to prefer the V1x.

How to choose: flight, spin and feel
- If you hit it high already or want a softer feel → Pro V1.
- If you want more height, carry and a firmer feel → Pro V1x.
- Moderate swing speed and want soft feel → start with the Pro V1.
- Faster swing, want a towering flight and extra greenside spin → the Pro V1x.
Honestly, the best test is to play a few holes with each on your own course. The problem is that a new dozen of either runs about A$85 — a lot to spend just to experiment.
The smart way to try both
This is where buying used and graded makes sense. A Mint or Near Mint Pro V1 or V1x plays like new but costs roughly half the price of a fresh box. For a ball you might lose a couple of every round, that is an easy decision — grab a dozen of each, play them back to back, and let your own ball flight decide.
Not sure what the grades mean? Our golf ball grades guide explains Mint, Near Mint, AAA and Practice in plain English, and if you want the full breakdown on the Pro V1 specifically, read are used Pro V1s worth it.
Bottom line
Pro V1 = lower flight, softer feel. Pro V1x = higher flight, firmer feel, a bit more spin. Match the ball to your natural trajectory, not to what the tour pros play. And buy them graded and used so you can actually test both without emptying your wallet.
